No invention since the incandescent lamp has created such a revolution in lighting design as the track. The track effectively liberates light and luminaires from the constraints of rigid mounting and allows lighting designers additional freedom to meet any specific lighting requirement. Luminaires in different shapes and with different photometric characteristics can be installed on track, to suit the specific lighting requirements. If the room interior or function changes, the luminaires can easily be replaced or moved on the track. The classic ERCO track with a cross-section of 33.5 x 34mm is primarily designed for mounting on ceilings or walls, whereas the flanged track is designed for suspended ceilings or flush mounted using a plaster trim profile. Individual track lengths of up to 4 metres can be butted together or formed into rectangular shapes. Flexible connectors are available to create more complex configurations.

In the standard form, the ERCO track is operated in 3-circuit installations. When using the ERCO track in a DALI application, the same conductors are used but are connected differently: only one conductor carries the supply voltage, the other two conductors are used for the control signal. Spotlights fitted with DALI adapters are designed for mechanical and electrical as well as for bus connection. Special DALI accessories ensure that the track can be correctly and safely wired. This arrangement ensures the optimum logistics and availability of DALI track systems. It also means that existing track installations can be economically retrofitted with ERCO DALI technology.
