History of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel
The story of the Ritz began at the end of the 19th century with the famous hotelier César Ritz. Born in 1850 as the 13th child of a Swiss shepherdess, Ritz became world famous as the 'King of Hoteliers' and 'Hotelier of Kings'. Probably his most famous hotels are the 'Ritz' in Paris, and 'The Savoy' and the 'Carlton' in London. With his decease in 1918 the luxurious Ritz era also ended for a long time. Admittedly, the Ritz-Carlton Investing Company did expand the chain in the USA, and for a while the name 'Ritz-Carlton' was seen in the cities of New York (Madison Ave & 54th Street), Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlantic City and Boca Raton. But with the economic crisis of the late 1920's even they were not spared bankruptcy. Apart from one: the Ritz Carlton in Boston survived thanks to the private fortune of its owner. Perfectly in keeping with the spirit of César Ritz, a strict uniform and even stricter etiquette continued to be observed here, whereby discretion and highest standards were just as much a matter of course as the fulfilment of special requests. In 1983 the name Ritz was again revived, this time by the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, LLC. The highest importance was placed on the traditionally high standard of luxury. In 1992 the company became the first and only business in the hotel branch to receive the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.
