The museum complex is embedded in the lonely, mountainous landscape of Shigaraki, near Kyoto. Ieoh Ming Pei's architecture is placed in an intensive dialogue with the natural surroundings.

Even approaching the museum is an experience: a tunnel and a spectacular suspension bridge were built for the sole purpose of providing access to the museum.
