13 Basic Principles of ERCO

ERCO primarily sells light and not light fittings. I.e. a medium for creating visibility without being visible itself. By means of light our customers want to see, present themselves, communicate, work efficiently or relax. As to cope with all these tasks we have developed programmes which are used for illuminating everything from work stations to stages. They provide light for the most different areas such as museums, display windows, universities, churches, discotheques, hotels, chain stores, administrative buildings and even for private purposes.

The following 13 points sum up the basic principles according to which we work. It is just an enumeration, no ranking.

1. To ERCO light is the forth dimension of architecture. Light interprets space, makes it perceivable, makes it an experience.

2. The actual light emission is invisible. Consistently, light is a medium that is not visible but makes things visible.

3. Light has to go along with shadow, semi dark and contrast to make space or objects experiences.

4. You need many light sources to make a room seem dark, may be even more than for illuminating it evenly.

5. The quality of perception and the quality of seeing results from good lighting.

6. The prerequisite for good light is visual comfort which means glare-free and reflected glare-free light.

7. In most cases the brightness of vertical surfaces is more important for perceiving than the brightness of horizontal surfaces.

8. Seeing is the most important sense perception, far more important than smelling, tasting, hearing and feeling.

9. The basic structure behind the development of our fittings is to provide light to see by first, observation lighting second, and attractive lighting third.

10. "Light instead of light fittings" is the corporate concept of ERCO.

11. Fittings are lighting instruments, tools, so to speak, designed for a specific area of application and not as aestethic artefacts.

12. Each current fashion in fittings may be good for the corresponding fashion in interior decoration, but it seems to solve lighting problems by chance rather than on purpose.

13.If you want to illuminate space - think in terms of light quality instead of beautiful shape.

About ERCO
ERCO Leuchten GmbH, Lüdenscheid, is one of the leading companies in the luminaire industry. The family business founded in 1934 now operates with over 60 subsidiaries, branches and agencies all around the world. Working together with internationally renowned designers, lighting engineers and architects, ERCO develops hardware and software for all areas of architectural lighting: luminaires and lighting systems for indoor and outdoor areas, as well as lighting control and software for scenographic lighting applications. In keeping with the corporate philosophy of "Light not luminaires," lighting equipment is not offered simply as furnishing for rooms, but rather luminaries are offered as instruments of lighting design. Many demanding architectural projects are illuminated using ERCO equipment, including the Berlin Reichstag, the Louvre in Paris and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. In 2007 ERCO's ca. 1100 strong worldwide workforce produced sales of 163 million euros.
