Presse release 02.10.2009
ERCO publishes a reference book: terminology and dimensions for the qualities of light.
"Light Perspectives - between culture and technology"
Lüdenscheid, October 2009 - The wide variety of modern lighting concepts in one publication. With the release of the reference book "Light Perspectives - between culture and technology" at the end of October, ERCO will be making an inspirational contribution towards communication between designers and engineers, building owners and planners, professionals and laymen. What are the intrinsic qualities of light? How are the techniques and design approaches implemented in architecture? And, how are abstract concepts conveyed with the help of lighting qualities? These are all questions that the book answers. The 21 chapters - divided into the three sections Light, Space and Perspectives - cover the actual qualities of light, the relationship between light and space and, finally, the intrinsic dimension of light as it relates to culture.
A logical structure to each chapter is used to introduce each dimension
Each chapter deals with a pair of opposite terms, such as "Light and dark", "Square and round" or "Static and dynamic", which each explore a new design dimension. The chapters are clearly structured and all follow a set four-stage format: introduction, essay, teaching and simulation.
A large-format photograph of a lighting application makes the initial introduction. This is accompanied by a brief text summarising the most important factors which relate to the respective pair of terms. The essay which follows provides deeper background information. It is through insights gained from the fields of culture, the natural sciences, history or literature that the reader is helped to consider the paired terminology even more closely. The wide range of opening propositions and associations raised by the essay prepare the ground for the didactical content that follows, putting them all in the correct context.
The scope of modern lighting applications
The didactic section of each chapter explains the subject area comprehensively with regards to perception, lighting technology and lighting design. The combination of texts, photos, drawings and diagrams optimally communicates the complex considerations relating to each situation. Charts and series of images are used to explain or reveal the intermediate stages between paired terms. The authors largely sourced the photographic material from the images of applications in ERCO's extensive photographic library, which is an ideal source from which to document the development of architectural lighting over past decades.
The final section uses photographic quality simulations of virtual architectural situations to show the differences in the lighting and to represent the paired terminology . In some cases, opposite extremes of a lighting situation are shown, while in other cases, preferences for certain lighting concepts are presented. The actual photometric data of specific ERCO lighting tools is used in each of these simulations. A sample chapter is available for downloading at: www.erco.com/light-perspectives.
The reference book "Light Perspectives - between culture and technology" will be available via the on-line mail order company Amazon and in selected, specialist stores, priced 39 euros.
ISBN (English edition): 978-3-9813216-1-6.

About ERCO
ERCO GmbH, Lüdenscheid, is one of the leading companies in the luminaire industry. The family business founded in 1934 now operates with over 60 subsidiaries, branches and agencies all around the world. Working together with internationally renowned designers, lighting engineers and architects, ERCO develops hardware and software for all areas of architectural lighting: luminaires and lighting systems for indoor and outdoor areas, as well as lighting control and software for scenographic lighting applications. In keeping with the corporate philosophy of "Light not luminaires," lighting equipment is not offered simply as furnishing for rooms, but rather luminaries are offered as instruments of lighting design. Many demanding architectural projects are illuminated using ERCO equipment, including the Berlin Reichstag, the National Gallery in London and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
