A feast for the senses - scenographic light in gastronomyThe new tutorial on ERCO Light System DALI clearly shows how simple flexible lighting design can be
Lüdenscheid, 15 May 2007 - It is no accident that restaurants are called the theatres of modern times - "seeing and being seen" is an important social activity. Every dedicated gastronomy concept establishment places great store not only on its cuisine but also on the particular spatial and scenic setting. Convincing architectural solutions, coupled with an atmospherically coherent lighting design, contribute to the creation of a memorable experience and feel-good factor. Making full use of the potential of light and architecture by shaping light into an effective scenography through its interaction with space, time and atmosphere. This requires a rational lighting design and flexible lighting tools - such as a lighting system consisting of individually addressable luminaires and the ERCO Light System DALI.
The new Light System DALI tutorial at
www.erco.com/tutorial is designed around restaurant architecture to demonstrate the various steps involved in the process. This extends from the planning through the installation to the commissioning of a creative lighting design. Thirty knowledge modules are arranged in five groups in an interactive and navigable film which shows in detail how the Light System DALI is used with the new Light Server 64+. This interactive medium demonstrates each task in a simple, comprehensible form; studying operating instructions is now replaced by an effective and entertaining alternative.
Ideally scenographic lighting requires that the planner has an extensive lighting vocabulary as the classic principles of qualitative lighting design such as "ambient luminescence, focal glow, play of brilliants", also apply in the gastronomic field. Additionally the vertical lighting option of using wallwashing to enhance the surfaces of the room will make the architecture clearly visible.
In the past scenographic lighting concepts required a considerable investment in time and material. Light System DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) has been specially developed for scenographic architectural lighting and consists of a few easy-to-use components. The factory-encoded, DALI-compatible ERCO luminaires are referred to as Light Clients. They are connected through the DALI control line to the central DALI controller - the Light Server. The DALI protocol industry standard limits the number of addresses in a conventional DALI system to 64. The ERCO Light System DALI overcomes this limitation with the Light Server 64+, as the Ethernet interface allows it to be networked with other similar Light Servers. This makes it possible to create large lighting systems with up to 12 Light Servers 64+ with a maximum of 768 DALI addresses. The integrated software, Light Studio, is used to set up light scenes and other more complex operating steps. For daily use, the touch screen Light Changers or even standard push-buttons can be used as operating controls. The Light Studio software is designed such that the user need not be concerned about topology of the DALI network or the number of servers: zones and light scenes can be planned and created with total freedom.
The ERCO Light System DALI makes it easy to vary the individual lighting concepts in gastronomical environments even after initial installation. The new Light Server 64+ with its user-friendly technology is ideal for large and complex installations of this type. In its interactive format, the new tutorial invites users to learn about a new and exciting lighting concept: "Tune the Light" using the ERCO Light System DALI.
The "Light and hospitality" brochure provides further information regarding gastronomical lighting concepts as well as the use of scenographic lighting with ERCO Light System DALI and the relevant working methods and planning techniques. From the end of May 2007 it will be available in six languages and can be downloaded in PDF format from
www.erco.com or ordered from any of the regional contacts in the ERCO Sales and Marketing network (for the full list of addresses go to
www.erco.com/contact).
Please note: Not all of the products and services described in the press releases are available in all markets and regions. Product designations can differ from one region to the next for reasons of trademark laws. Products with DALI technology are not available in the USA and in Japan at this time.
