'Veltins Arena' platform roofing

Functional traffic architecture - yet also an attractive, striking symbol day and night: the redesigned tram stop at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, one of the venues of the 2006 Football World Cup.

12 June 2006: Thousands of fans arrive by tram at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, the venue of the qualifying match between the USA and the Czech Republic. over 300 tons of steel are suspended above them, overarching the area for 72 meters without supports; an elegant, slender steel truss frame with transparent figured glass panels.

It is a beautiful summer’s day. As yet, the platform roof seems but a bold feat of civil engineering - but once the sun has set, it will become a shining landmark.

To turn the roof into a nightly light signal, both lower booms of the steel frame have been fitted with Paratec floodlights with asymmetrical light distribution. Each side illuminates the opposite side panelled with semitransparent elements. The floodlights are fitted with HIT-DE 150W metal halide lamps for optimal energy efficiency and to ensure that the roof from afar appears as an evenly lit construction.
