Qualitative lighting design for Community

The foyer of the Ikazia hospital in Rotterdam perfectly demonstrates the principles of perception-orientated lighting in a specific application within a public building. The lighting concept combines vertical lighting with horizontal general lighting. In this way the room is structured via light and differentiated into foreground and background. The luminaires integrated into the ceiling provide the ceiling design with structure in a discreet way.

Emphasizing room depth via wallwashing

Wallwashing is decisive for the look of the room and impression of brightness because vertical planes determine our field of view up to around 80%. For this reason vertical lighting is not only a question of esthetics, but simultaneously an energy-saving approach to achieving a bright spatial impression. With the Ikazia hospital it can be noticed how wallwashing emphasizes and renders legible the graduated depths in the architecture. The vertical lighting gives the construction volumes projecting into the foyer a lightweight, almost floating appearance.

Creating orientation with general lighting

General lighting via downlights provides uniform illumination of the circulation areas in the hospital foyer. The continuous general lighting also gives the users flexibility, e.g. for arranging furniture. Differing ceiling heights also place various demands on the lighting technology of the downlights, ideally met by the diverse spectrum of ERCO lighting tools. The focus here with downlights for high rooms is on visual comfort, achieved via suitably good glare control.
