Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Terminal 2

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is one of the city’s two major airports, located closer to the city Centre. It was the first airport in Shanghai, operating since 1923. As air traffic picked up, the amount of flights outgrew the building and a major overhaul was seriously needed, and it reopened to the public 16 March 2021. As a major part of the Hongqiao Comprehensive Transportation Hub (Hongqiao Airport + Hongqiao Railway Station + Hongqiao Bus Station), Terminal 2 mainly serves China domestic flights and covers 362,600 square meters, four times the size of Terminal 1. One of the highlights of Shanghai Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 is its environmentally-friendly design intention, aiming to be “land efficient”, “energy efficient”, “water Efficient”, and “(construction) material efficient”.

By using the AAA concept, we identify the volume of the space and any other defining Architectural characteristic. Then it's about the tasks that needs to be done in this space and the amount of brightness needed for each Activity zone (zonal lighting). This way we can have light only where it’s needed, in the brightness level needed for the task, reducing the overall energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency. All these are done while creating a soft, welcoming Atmosphere that reduces travel stress.

The first thing people see when we enter a space are the walls because of our principal line of vision. Thus, by lighting up these vertical planes, we are able to light up the space without using as much light fixtures compared to conventional lighting matrixes. Lighting vertical places also define dimensions and room boundaries, playing an important role with orientation while emphasizing the sheer volume of the space, creating a visual impact to the visitors.

It can be a challenge in terms of design and technology to efficiently and uniformly illuminate such high walls. Using our Quintessence wallwashers, the walls of the check-in hall are uniformly and efficiently illuminated, even with the height, catching people’s attention and leading them to where they need to be, while creating a bright, friendly backdrop for reception areas.

High ceilings provide a spacious atmosphere in the terminal's various waiting areas and traffic zone. The ceilings in the check-in hall are illuminated by Lightboard ceiling washlights. The departure hall is illuminated with Pantrac ceiling washlights.

The light fixtures at both areas are mounted discreetly into the supporting structure. This lends the roof a lightweight, almost floating appearance and the indirect lighting creates uniform, glare free, general lighting that creates a calm and pleasant atmosphere.
