Artificial light is used to create lighting effects like those observed in nature. Sunlight represents direct light. And the light that falls through a closed blanket of clouds is a prime example of diffused light.

The most important points
- 1Use diffused light – for example across illuminated wall surfaces – for general lighting, because it feels familiar to us from nature and creates orientation within a space.
- 2Use hard light from a point source when an object should cast a clear shadow and stand out visibly from the background.
- 3Combine both types of light: diffused light reveals the form of the space, while hard light additionally reveals the material and surface of the objects within it.
