Modelling with light
Light and shadows
Directed light creates modelling and brilliance
The directed light of accent lighting achieves brilliance on surfaces and creates high-contrast modelling via light and shadow. Shadows cast sideways emphasise the shapes and details of textures. The narrower the light distribution, the more significant the effect.
Diffuse light smooths surfaces
Diffuse light reduces the 3-dimensional structure of products. Shapes and textures become more difficult to read. Brilliance cannot be achieved with diffuse lighting either, and surfaces lose their sense of value. Diffuse light is created either by indirect lighting only or by excessive spill light.
