The Tung Auditorium at the University of Liverpool is a 400-seat performance space designed primarily for music, while also accommodating lectures, talks and public events. As a venue that must respond to a wide range of acoustic and visual requirements, lighting plays a critical role in supporting both performance quality and audience experience.

The architectural concept by Ellis Williams Architects focuses attention on performers and audience alike, with surfaces and volumes carefully shaped for acoustic performance. The lighting solution follows this principle, delivering clarity, visual comfort and flexibility while remaining discreet within the space.

Uniform illumination with high visual comfort

For a multifunctional auditorium, lighting must balance performance lighting requirements with the needs of teaching, rehearsals and lectures. ERCO Atrium Pendant luminaires were selected to provide high levels of uniformity and excellent glare control, ensuring comfortable visual conditions for audiences, performers and speakers alike.

The lighting achieves illuminance levels of approximately 600–700 lux, supporting clear visibility for reading, note-taking and circulation without compromising the calm, focused atmosphere required for musical performance. Carefully controlled light distribution avoids distracting reflections and excessive contrast, allowing attention to remain on the stage.

Low glare optics are essential within the auditorium’s seating geometry, particularly where sightlines extend across multiple rows and levels. The result is a visually balanced environment that supports long periods of occupancy without fatigue.

Flexible control for varied performance scenarios

The Tung Auditorium hosts a wide spectrum of events, from orchestral and chamber music to jazz, amplified performance and lectures. To support this diversity, the lighting system integrates DMX and DALI-controlled luminaires, enabling precise adjustment and scene setting for different uses.

All DMX drivers are remotely located, ensuring straightforward access for maintenance and significantly reducing disruption to the auditorium’s operation. This approach simplifies future servicing while extending the longevity of the installation, which is a key consideration for a heavily programmed public venue.

Supporting performance without visual distraction

The lighting concept is deliberately restrained in its appearance. Luminaires are integrated into the architectural language of the auditorium, contributing to the overall spatial atmosphere without drawing attention to themselves. This ensures that lighting enhances, rather than competes with, the acoustic surfaces and material palette.
