In the vibrant landscape of Singapore's art scene, Artworks Gallery stands as a new beacon, dedicated to making art accessible to a broader public. Nestled within a new, bustling mall in Holland Village, their commitment to high-quality presentation was paramount, leading them to a partnership with ERCO to illuminate their diverse collection.
Artworks Gallery is a dynamic commercial space with a strong belief in bringing art to the masses. By choosing a location within a popular mall in Holland Village, they actively encourage members of the public from all walks of life to engage with art. This mission of accessibility, however, doesn't compromise their dedication to impeccable display, a balance achieved through thoughtful design and premium lighting.
The challenge: versatility for a dynamic commercial space
As a new commercial gallery, Artworks Gallery faced the challenge of creating an adaptable and visually compelling environment for constantly rotating exhibitions. The space featured an open ceiling, demanding a flexible lighting solution that could integrate seamlessly while providing precise control. Crucially, the curator from Indonesia was a strong advocate for superior lighting tools, having experienced the difference quality illumination makes in art presentation. This curator's insistence on "good lighting tools" led the interior designer (who was already familiar with ERCO's brand reputation) to approach us.
ERCO's Solution: flexibility, ambiance, and dynamic spotlighting
ERCO's lighting concept for Artworks Gallery was designed to meet their specific needs for flexibility, aesthetic integration with the open ceiling, and the demanding requirements of a commercial art space.
Tracks were strategically utilized for the open ceiling, providing the essential flexibility needed for the constant changing of artwork. This track system allows the gallery to easily reposition and re-aim spotlights to suit new layouts and highlight diverse pieces, from paintings to sculptures.
Optec spotlights were chosen for their precision in delivering various beam angles – spot, flood, and wallwasher – ensuring that each artwork receives tailored illumination. This allows for focused highlighting of individual pieces or even washing an entire wall with light to create a cohesive backdrop.
To enhance the gallery's welcoming ambiance and attract curious mall patrons, wallwashers were also applied around the shop windows. This creates a bright, inviting facade that draws attention to the art within.
Complementing the precise task lighting, Skim track downlights were integrated to provide general ambient lighting throughout the space. Their wide flood distribution ensures a comfortable, even illumination that establishes the overall brightness, allowing the Optec spotlights to create impactful accents and define visual hierarchy without the space feeling dark or dull.
The outcome: art illuminated, audiences engaged
Today, Artworks Gallery in Holland Village stands as a testament to how intelligent lighting design can perfectly align with a gallery's mission. ERCO's versatile Optec spotlights and Skim track downlights provide the precise control and adaptability required for a commercial gallery with frequently changing exhibitions. The space is not only beautifully illuminated, showcasing each artwork to its best advantage, but also radiates a welcoming glow that embodies Artworks Gallery's commitment to making art accessible and engaging for everyone who steps through its doors.
