Light for black-and-white precision.
At the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg, light becomes a decisive factor in the perception of photographic art. As a leading institution for contemporary photography, the exhibition spaces require a lighting solution that delivers absolute visual precision, high contrast, and maximum flexibility.
The architecture remains deliberately restrained—creating a neutral spatial framework where light defines the visual hierarchy and directs attention entirely to the artwork.
Light for contrast, clarity and true colour.
ERCO was selected to meet the demanding requirements of exhibition lighting. Parscan spotlights in 3500K with DALI control, in white housing colour, integrate discreetly into the gallery while delivering precise, high-quality illumination.
The choice of 3500K is central to the concept. It provides a neutral-white light that enhances contrast in black-and-white photography: blacks appear deep and saturated, while whites remain crisp and brilliant—allowing the full tonal range to unfold with clarity and precision. Black reads as black. White reads as white.
At the same time, 3500K ensures excellent colour rendering across the spectrum. Even tones in the red range are reproduced with natural saturation and depth—an essential quality for exhibitions that combine monochrome works with colour photography or mixed media.
Parscan spotlights create focused accent lighting with high brilliance, revealing detail, texture, and tonal depth.
The 3500K spectrum enhances contrast in monochrome works while accurately rendering colours—even in sensitive red hues.
DALI control enables flexible adaptation to different exhibitions and curatorial intentions. The white luminaire finish allows the lighting tools to recede visually, maintaining the calm architectural background.
The result is a lighting environment that supports visual perception at the highest level—precise, balanced, and without distraction.
Light as a curatorial instrument.
At Hasselblad Center, light structures the exhibition space and guides the viewer’s gaze. Each beam is precisely directed to emphasise individual works, define spatial relationships, and create visual rhythm.
Flexibility is essential. With ERCO’s lighting system, curators can adapt light levels and distributions with precision—ensuring that every artwork is presented under optimal conditions.
Light instead of luminaires
The lighting remains intentionally unobtrusive. What is perceived is not the luminaire, but the effect of light.
At Hasselblad Center, this approach becomes particularly evident: light sharpens contrast, reveals tonal depth, and ensures accurate colour perception—while remaining visually quiet.
The project exemplifies a core principle—“light instead of luminaires”—where light itself defines space and enables perception at the highest level.
