Sheldonian Theatre - Oxford University
Lighting the Sheldonian Theatre

An auditorium lighting upgrade for one of Oxford’s most significant historic spaces.

The Sheldonian Theatre is not only one of Oxford’s most recognisable buildings, but also its most ceremonial interior. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century, the Grade I-listed building hosts the University of Oxford's most prestigious ceremonial events as well as a range of private and commercial events including concerts, lectures, weddings, dinners and drinks receptions throughout the year. Its lighting must therefore do more than illuminate, it must support ritual, performance and architectural presence, while meeting modern operational demands.

By 2024, Oxford University Event Venues, the team running the Sheldonian, knew that the existing auditorium lighting had reached the end of its life. The system was inefficient, inflexible and increasingly difficult to maintain. Light levels were insufficient for contemporary event requirements, and facilities teams were managing frequent call-outs simply to keep the system operational. A comprehensive upgrade became essential.

A new lighting strategy

Using ERCO Optec luminaires, the University of Oxford’s Estates Services Department integrated a complete LED lighting replacement for the auditorium, undertaking the entire project in-house, from early scoping and design through to installation, commissioning and staff training.

The ambition was clear: to transform the Sheldonian’s lighting from a functional necessity into a versatile, high-performance tool that could enhance the space while respecting its historic character.

Light quality, efficiency and control

The new LED installation delivers a step-change in performance. Overall illuminance levels in the auditorium increased by 5,567%, dramatically improving visibility for audiences, performers and presenters alike. At the same time, energy consumption was reduced by 90%, significantly lowering operational costs and aligning the venue with the University’s sustainability objectives.

Beyond efficiency and brightness, the upgrade introduced a new level of creative control. Integrated theatrical functionality allows the lighting to be programmed into scenes, spotlighted compositions and colour-based atmospheres. These can be operated intuitively via an iPad with Casambi Bluetooth Technology, enabling venue staff to tailor the lighting to each event without specialist technical support.

From formal ceremonies to concerts and contemporary events, the auditorium can now shift seamlessly between lighting moods, supporting both the dignity of tradition and the flexibility demanded by modern programming.

Designed for a living venue

Crucially, the lighting upgrade was conceived around how the Sheldonian is used today. The system allows rapid reconfiguration, reducing set-up times while expanding creative possibilities for event organisers. Improved reliability has also reduced maintenance intervention, easing pressure on facilities teams and ensuring consistent performance across a busy annual schedule.

The ten-month project, which began in March 2024, brought together architectural, electrical, compliance and venue specialists, ensuring the solution was tailored precisely to the building, its users and its heritage constraints. ERCO Optec luminaires were supplied in a bespoke RAL finish to match the existing woodwork — respecting the heritage architecture and reinforcing ERCO’s principle of light, not luminaire.
The result is discreet integration, where illumination enhances the space without visual distraction.

Looking ahead

With the auditorium complete, work is now underway on Phase 2 of the project, extending LED upgrades to back-of-house spaces. Further improvements to the gallery, circulation areas and cupola lighting are also in development, continuing a long-term vision for the Sheldonian that places light at the centre of its future use.

Lighting heritage for contemporary use

The Sheldonian Theatre lighting upgrade demonstrates how carefully considered LED solutions can revitalise historic interiors without compromising their architectural integrity. By combining high visual comfort, dramatic flexibility and outstanding energy efficiency, the new ERCO lighting supports the building’s ceremonial role while enabling it to function as a dynamic, contemporary venue.

In doing so, the project ensures that one of Oxford’s most important spaces is not only preserved, but illuminated for the next generation.
