A comparison of investment costs

Decisive for the standard-compliant operation of lighting systems are lumen maintenance and the LED failure rate. Comparing an ERCO high-performance LED (L90/B10) with a standard LED (L70/B50) demonstrates the positive effect of high-performance LEDs on investment costs. An office with a uniform matrix of luminaires consisting of 50 downlights serves as a reference. Light distribution is identical in both offices. The LEDs however differ with regard to lumen maintenance and failure rate. The analysis shows that reinvestments are inevitable in the long run with lower LED quality.

Lumen maintenance: L90/B10 up to 50,000h
Failure rate: 0.1% of LEDs up to 50,000h.
This corresponds to a failure of 1 per 1000 LEDs for up to 50,000h.

Standard LED module

Lumen maintenance: L70/B50 up to 50,000h
Failure rate: 0,2% of LED modules per 1,000h
This corresponds to a failure of 2 from 100 LED modules per 10,000h.

ERCO High-Power LED

For room-related, quantitative lighting design in accordance with EN 12464-1 and with unknown arrangements of workstations, illuminance of Em > 500lx on the working plane and uniformity of U0 > 0.6 are recommended. The false-colour image visualises modifications in illuminance and uniformity due to lumen maintenance and the failure rate.

Standard LED module

Assuming identical maintenance factors, identical lighting values exist at the time of commissioning with use of standard LED modules. In reality though and due to the lower lamp luminous flux maintenance factor, a higher number of luminaires would be required to achieve the required maintenance values of the illuminance.

ERCO High-Power LED

With ERCO high-performance LEDs (L90/B10), illuminance after 10,000 operating hours is almost unchanged compared to the original value. Uniformity remains good.

Standard LED module

With standard LED modules (L70/B50), significant reduction in luminous flux occurs after 10,000 operating hours. Furthermore, with 50 installed luminaires one downlight is expected to fail (failure rate: 0.2% of LED modules per 10,000h). Therefore uniformity falls below the normative specification of U0 > 0.6. The luminaire replacement therefore requires reinvestments over the operating duration.

ERCO High-Power LED

With ERCO high-performance LEDs (L90/B10), illuminance and uniformity remain above normative recommendations even after 20,000 operating hours.

Standard LED module

Due to the reduction of luminous flux with L70/B50, illuminance is only slightly above the recommended minimum value of 500lx after 20,000 operating hours. Because of the failure rate of standard LED modules (0.2% of LED modules per 1,000h), purchasing an additional luminaire cannot be avoided to compensate for the insufficient uniformity.

With the ERCO LED quality (L90/B10) the office lighting still complies to standards after 30,000 operating hours because the reduction in luminous flux is only minimal and uniformity remains constant.

Standard LED module

Already after 30,000 operating hours, luminous flux reduction of the L70/B50 lighting solution is so serious that the normative value of 500lx can no longer be achieved. This means that all luminaires must be completely replaced. This doubles the original investment costs, whereas the qualitatively higher solution with L90/B10 specification still requires no reinvestment.

Even after 40,000 operating hours the ERCO LEDs (L90/B10) comply with the normative requirements for illuminance and uniformity for this office workplace lighting.

Standard LED module

Due to the failure rate of 0.2% of LED modules per 1,000 operating hours, with an installation of 50 luminaires the failure of one luminaire each 10,000 hours must be expected. Repurchasing individual luminaires is necessary to ensure that the uniformity of the normative recommendation of U0 > 0.6 is not fallen below.

With its high-performance LEDs (L90/B10), ERCO offers high investment security even with lighting systems with up to 50,000 operating hours. Even the possible higher initial costs are less important when considered across the operating time with an L70/B50 installation..
